Why Early Orthodontic Treatment at Age 7 Is Essential: Understanding Phase I Orthodontics

Early-Treatment

Hello everyone,

It’s Dr. Corey Corpodian from Orange County Orthodontics, and today I’d like to address a common concern parents often voice: “Isn’t my child too young for braces?” or “Is Phase I orthodontic treatment necessary?”

As a trusted orthodontic professional, I understand these concerns. However, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends a child’s first orthodontic check-up by age 7, and there’s a wealth of solid reasons behind this recommendation. Let’s explore why early interceptive treatment, or Phase I orthodontic treatment, is so crucial for long-term oral health and a successful orthodontic outcome.

Understanding Phase I Orthodontic Treatment

Before diving into the reasons, let’s clarify what Phase I orthodontic treatment is. Also known as early interceptive treatment, it typically begins when a child still has a mix of primary (baby) and permanent teeth, usually around the age of 7. The primary goal is to correct significant problems early on, guide the growth of the jaw, and make room for the permanent teeth to grow in properly.

Now, you may wonder, “Why so early?” Here’s why:

A Proactive Approach

By age 7, the first adult molars have typically erupted, establishing the back bite and enabling an orthodontist to evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. This early evaluation allows us to spot potential issues before they become more complicated and harder to treat.

Guiding Jaw Growth

Orthodontic problems often stem from insufficient or disproportionate jaw growth. Phase I treatment allows us to guide jaw growth, improve minor skeletal imbalances, and potentially avoid the need for future jaw surgery.

Preventing Dental Trauma

Protruding front teeth are more susceptible to injury. Early correction can decrease the risk of trauma to these vulnerable permanent teeth.

Simplifying Future Treatment

Early interceptive treatment can simplify later treatment. When performed at the right time, it can create room for permanent teeth to come in naturally and lessen the chance of impacted or stuck teeth. Additionally, it can reduce or sometimes even eliminate the need for tooth extraction in the future.

Phase I and Phase II: The Complete Orthodontic Solution

It’s important to note that Phase I treatment doesn’t eliminate the need for orthodontic treatment during adolescence. Phase II treatment, which often involves full upper and lower braces, will still be necessary as all the permanent teeth erupt. However, Phase I treatment can simplify this second phase of treatment, and it often results in a shorter overall treatment time.

The Value of an Early Consultation with Dr. Corpodian

While not every child will need Phase I treatment, an early consultation around age 7 with a trusted orthodontist like myself allows for the timely detection of potential issues. In some cases, we might find that immediate treatment isn’t necessary, but periodic check-ups will be beneficial to monitor development. In others, early intervention could be a game-changer for a child’s oral health.

At Orange County Orthodontics, we’re committed to guiding your child on a path to a healthier, more confident smile. Remember, an early start can be a head start in the lifelong journey toward impeccable oral health.
